Our Cellar Door Is Re-Opening

We are thrilled to announce that from Wednesday June 3rd our cellar door will re-open for tastings, and as Government restrictions are lifted, we will gradually return to a 'new normal'. This includes Seated Tastings, a requirement to sign into our Visitor Register and a limit to the amount of people permitted into our cellar door at any one time.

Our Pinot Noir Project

Pinot Noir at Pfeiffer Wines has always been special but it took Ampelographer, Dr. Gerald Atkinson, from Lincoln University in New Zealand to excite us all to realise the treasure we have right here, on our Sunday Creek Vineyard in Wahgunyah, NE Victoria.

Chris Pfeiffer

Take a look at this picture.  This lovely, happy, smiling face of Chris is when he WAS the Chief Judge at the Rutherglen Wine Show and Australian Fortified Wine Show this year, 2019.

This was Chris’s last year.  He has been “’The Chief” since 1986, and had been judging wines as a Wine Show Judge at many different locations throughout Australia, for many years before that.

Vale Colin Campbell

This letter is a story, a story of sadness and a story of happiness, as I have reason to look back into the last 35 years.

Many of you who are “Pfriends of Pfeiffers” will also be friends of Campbells Wines of Rutherglen.  Those who are, will already know the sad news that has rocked Rutherglen.  For those who don’t know already, Rutherglen and the Australian Wine Industry as a whole, lost a great friend and ally with the sudden and unexpected death of Colin Campbell on the 10th of May, just a few months ago.

Pfeiffer Pinot Noir

As you know, our Pinot Noir vines are the oldest on our Sunday Creek vineyard.  They have had the hardest life, beginning with their trip here, originally from Burgundy in France.  They have suffered through many, many floods, times of great stress through drought, and like we humans, they continue to age.  They have become very gnarled and nobbly, some have not responded to all the love and affection heaped upon them and have given up their zest for life, while others are “soldiering on”, but struggling more and more as the years go by.

The Life Of A Winemaker

"The Life of a Winemaker" as seen through my eyes, those of the wife of one winemaker, Chris and the mother of the other winemaker, Jen.

The year for the winemaker is an ongoing programme, though not just for one year.  Some wines take longer than the year of the vintage to be made, like red wines that mature in oak barrels for more than a year before being bottled. Then there are the "pfamous" fortified wines that mature forever in their special oak barrels and are being tended to all the time by the winemakers.

However, let’s get back to the start of the year.  As summer progresses during January and the grapes are ripening, developing lots of flavour and sweet fruit characters, Chris and Jen walk through the vines, plucking grapes from different parts of the bunches and different parts of the vine.
