Fruit Sourcing North East Victoria - Rutherglen | King Valley | Eldorado

Harvest Date February, March 2016

Vintage The 2016 growing season looked very promising, with good Winter and Spring rainfall until October.  November and December were dry and warm, leading to a relatively mild January.  Supplementary irrigation was required to maintain good soil moisture levels and canopy health.

The first week of February saw two inches of rain fall, which was just before the onset of harvest, so certainly created a few nerves at the beginning of vintage.

Fortunately the rest of the harvest remained dry, and all grape varieties came in very early, with picking starting on the 10th February.  Vintage progressed at a fast and furious pace, due to three very warm weeks of temperatures between 35-40C, with incredibly rapid ripening across all varieties.  Early blocks of Cabernet, Durif and Muscat were all harvested in February!  

March saw the warm and dry conditions continue, along with the fast pace of the vintage.   All varieties were harvested by the end of the month, with the exception of Muscadelle for Topaque, which was picked in April.

Overall cropping levels were average and the quality of the vintage was good, with ripe and full flavours, with Muscadelle for Topaque the highlight.

Winemakers Comments The 2016 Pfeiffer Shiraz is a blend of 5 different parcels from four different vineyard sites in north eastern Victoria.  Each parcel was handled separately, being picked on different dates.  Two parcels were fermented in open vats with hand plunging 3 times daily.  They were both pressed into brand new American and French oak barrels (puncheons and hogsheads) with around 1/3 of the ferment remaining.  The other three parcels commenced fermentation in stainless steel fermenters, after a cold soak for 2-3 days.  These parcels finished fermentation on skins and were pressed into stainless steel tanks to undergo MLF.

The barrel fermented parcels were matured on their yeast lees for approximately 3 months, with weekly batonage. In July 2016, the Pfeiffer Shiraz 2016 blend was then put together in tank, cold stabilized and lightly clarified prior to being transferred to barrel for maturation.  Maturation took place in French and American oak hogsheads and puncheons for a further 12 months.  The wine was then blended from the very best oak barrels, fined and clarified prior to bottling in late August 2017.

Our 2016 Pfeiffer Shiraz has a vibrant dark purple-red colour, with a lifted nose of red berries, plums and spice.  The palate is rich and full bodied, with ripe mid-palate fruit and a long, savoury persistence.
