Like most of south eastern Australia, Rutherglen experienced dry conditions in winter and spring of 2019. Our annual rainfall for 2019 was well below the average 565mm, with only 356mm falling for the year. With such low rainfall, we were forced to commence irrigation in late September to try to build canopy strength. Irrigation continued throughout the rest of the year, constantly throughout the summer and also during the harvest.
Unfortunately, like many other wine regions in Australia, we experienced the devastating effects of the 2019/2020 bushfires, and the impact of smoke exposure to our vineyards, both the family owned and our long term growers.
After extensive analytical and organoleptical testing of both our fruit and micro ferments (we conducted 70 micro ferments prior to the start of vintage), we made the heartbreaking decision to reject approximately 70% of our normal intake. Fortunately, we were able to draw on our industry friends and colleagues, who helped us source fruit from other regions across Victoria, that weren’t smoke affected, including Great Western, Bendigo, Heathcote, Nagambie and Swan Hill.
Generally speaking, yields were naturally low, due to the continued dry conditions of the season. The quality of the fruit that was harvested was very good, particularly in the reds. The low yields saw very good colour development, with the fuller varieties of Shiraz, Durif, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo being the highlights of the season. Our white varieties were expressive of their varietal characters, with the textural varieties of Chardonnay and Vermentino being the highlights.

Winemakers Comments |
The 2020 Pfeiffer Carlyle Shiraz has been made with grapes from 3 vineyard sites, across Victoria – Great Western, Heathcote and Nagambie . The grapes from each vineyard were handled separately. Each parcel was given a cold soak for 2-3 days prior to fermentation. Fermentation occurred in static fermenters (with hand pump overs or rack and returns twice daily) at temperatures of 20-28°C. The Great Western parcel was pressed, and immediately transferred into one and two year old oak hogsheads to complete fermentation with 1/3 ferment remaining. The other parcels were fermented to dryness on skins before being pressed to tank to complete MLF before their barrel maturation.
Our Pfeiffer Carlyle Shiraz 2020 was matured as separate parcels, being cold stabilized prior to their oak maturation. The wine was matured in a mixture of both French and American oak puncheons, hogsheads and barriques, all of various ages, for approximately 12-15 months. The wine was blended from oak, fined and clarified prior to bottling in early September 2021.
Our 2020 Pfeiffer Carlyle Shiraz has a deep red colour. Rich plummy fruit, with spicy, peppery overtones greet the nose. The palate is rich and fleshy, with red berry fruit on the mid palate and a touch of spice on the finish.
