Fruit Sourcing Victoria (Swan Hill)

Harvest Date February 2020

Vintage Like most of south eastern Australia, Rutherglen experienced dry conditions in winter and spring of 2019. Our annual rainfall for 2019 was well below the average 565mm, with only 356mm falling for the year. With such low rainfall, we were forced to commence irrigation in late September to try to build canopy strength. Irrigation continued throughout the rest of the year, constantly throughout the summer and also during the harvest.

Unfortunately, like many other wine regions in Australia, we experienced the devastating effects of the 2019/2020 bushfires, and the impact of smoke exposure to our vineyards, both the family owned and our long term growers.

After extensive analytical and organoleptical testing of both our fruit and micro ferments (we conducted 70 micro ferments prior to the start of vintage), we made the heartbreaking decision to reject approximately 70% of our normal intake.

Fortunately, we were able to draw on our industry friends and colleagues, who helped us source fruit from other regions across Victoria, that weren’t smoke affected, including Great Western, Bendigo, Heathcote, Nagambie and Swan Hill.

Generally speaking, yields were naturally low, due to the continued dry conditions of the season. The quality of the fruit that was harvested was very good, particularly in the reds. The low yields saw very good colour development, with the fuller varieties of Shiraz, Durif, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo being the highlights of the season. Our white varieties were expressive of their varietal characters, with the textural varieties of Chardonnay and Vermentino being the highlights.

Winemakers Comments Our Pfeiffer Tempranillo 2020 is made from a single vineyard in Swan Hill. The fruit was machine harvested in the cool of the early morning, with approximately 15% of the juice being run-off at the crusher. The must underwent at cold maceration for 3 days, before yeast innoculation. Fermentation occurred on skins in a static fermenter for approximately 10 days, with manual pump overs occurring twice daily. With around 20% of the ferment remaining, a portion was run-off into barrel to complete fermentation, while the balance fermented to dryness on skins before pressing.

The barrel fermented wine was left on its yeast lees for around 4 months, with weekly batonage (lees stirring), before being pumped out and blended with the non-barrel fermented component. The wine was then matured for approximately 12 months in a combination of new, 1, 2, 3 and 6 year old French and American oak barrels of various sizes, mainly 500L puncheons. After oak maturation, the wine was blended, fined and clarified prior to bottling in early September 2021.

Our 2020 Pfeiffer Tempranillo is a deep, rich red colour. Aromas of dark cherries, chocolate and spice spring from the glass. The palate is rich and generous, with juicy mid-palate fruit and a long, savoury finish.

Partners Tempranillo is a versatile food wine and pairs well with any grilled meat; or spicy, vegetarian dishes.
