2010 Pfeiffer Riesling

A wonderful wine, reminiscent of limes and passionfruit. Good mid-palate flavour balanced by a crisp acidity. |

2010 was promising to be a fabulous vintage, with good winter and spring rainfall in 2009. November was particularly hot, with record high temperatures, and we thought we were in for yet another hot, dry vintage. We worked hard in the vineyard on building our canopies to provide greater shade for the fruit to lengthen the ripening period and reduce the risks from sunburn. January and February were cooler than expected, and we were full of excitement when deciding to commence picking on 3rd February. However, our plans were thwarted by a rain event on that day, in which we received 20mm. This delayed the start of vintage by one week, and we picked the first grapes of the year – Chardonnay - on 10th February. February remained relatively dry and we harvested all our white varieties and some of the earlier ripening reds in that month. Fruit quality was high with good flavours and colours. Disaster struck during the first weekend in March, in which we received 90mm of rain over 3 days, and it continued to rain at least weekly for the rest of the month. This put a lot of pressure on the winery to bring in certain varieties quickly, and resulted in an early end to vintage, with the last parcel of fruit harvested on 19th April. Overall a good vintage, with white varieties standing out. |

A blend of two parcels, each fermented separately in stainless steel tanks for approximately 11 days at temperatures between 14° & 16° Celsius. The wine was blended, stabilized, fined and clarified prior to bottling in early May 2010 to lock in fruitfulness and freshness.
Riesling is regarded very highly in the Pfeiffer family for its wonderful depth of flavour and great potential for bottle maturation.
Our 2010 Riesling has a pristine pale straw colour, with green hues. The nose is classic Riesling – mineral, citrus and a hint of talc. The palate has an intensity of flavour, yet shows elegance and restraint, and has a great acid line ensuring a crisp, clean finish. A Pfeiffer “pfamily pfavourite”, this wine is delicious now, but will reward long term maturation until 2020.
