Harvest Date February and March 2012

Vintage After the 2011 vintage saw us receive drought breaking rains as a result of the 2010-2011 La Niña event, our vineyards experienced great growth for the 2012 season.  Trimming, leaf plucking and shoot thinning were all employed to control vine growth and vigour.  The La Niña weather pattern intensified in the second half of 2011, and regular rain events were experienced throughout the growing season.  Summer was relatively mild, with only 2 days of temperatures greater than 40°C experienced.  Despite this mild summer, vintage commenced in the 2nd week of February 2012.  Colours in red varieties were strong and fruit flavours were good across all varieties.  We received a severe rain event in the first week of March, where 250mm rain fell over 5 days.  This was not welcome rain, and put incredible pressure on the winery, as fruit was required to be harvested quickly after the rain.  We completed the remaining 75% of our fruit intake in the 3 weeks that followed.  Despite the high pressure of the season, we have many parcels of both red and white that are showing great potential.

Winemakers Comments The 2012 Pfeiffer Carlyle Shiraz has been made with grapes from 4 vineyard sites, all offering various characters.  The grapes from each vineyard were handled separately.  Three of the four parcels were given a cold soak for 2 days, whilst fermentation was initiated immediately in the fourth parcel.  Fermentation occurred in static fermenters at temperatures of 22-27°C, being pumped over twice daily.  All parcels were kept on skins until fermentation was complete, then they were pressed into tank.

Each parcel was matured separately, in American and French oak barrels for 12-14 months.  The wine was blended, fined and clarified prior to bottling in September 2013.

Our 2012 Pfeiffer Carlyle Shiraz is deep purple-red in colour.  Aromas of red berries, spice and cloves abound on the nose.  The palate is richly flavoured, with ripe plum and berry fruit, persisting to a long and savoury finish.
